Görlitz is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the east Germany. Görlitz is renowned for its architectural treasures spanning different eras. The setting of the old town has led to it featuring as a backdrop to many well-known films – so much so that it now has the nickname ‘Görli-wood’. Görlitz has an interesting old town in the streets and alleys between Postplatz and the Lausitzer Neiße river and there are literally thousands of listed buildings to explore.

On the River Vistula, we find Włocławek, a city that in the past was called the “capital of Kuyavia”, one of the oldest towns in Poland. Some of the historic landmarks of Włocławek that are worth visiting include the Cathedral Basilica dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, the monastery of the Order of the Reformati in Wolności Square, and the Bishop’s Palace. One of the most important places associated with Włocławek is the local dam.

 

 

Torun, 1 h. stop 20€

The charming Old Town of Torun is of such international importance that it has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Its red-brick Gothic architecture resembles the historic district of Gdansk, but with a much different atmosphere as Torun proves to be much friendlier, cosier and less spoilt by the influx of visitors. Torun, while being the hometown of the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus.

Moritzburg Palace is one of the most impressive baroque palaces in central Europe. Reached via a tree-lined avenue, it is situated on an island in the middle of a lake. After visiting the palace, you can enjoy a romantic stroll to the enchanting Fasanenschlösschen (little pheasant castle) built in the rococo style.

Frankfurt Oder lies on the Oder River 90km east of Berlin, was practically wiped off the map in the final days of WWII. It never recovered its one-time grandeur as a medieval trading centre and university town. It didn’t help that the city was split in two after the war, with the eastern suburb across the river becoming the Polish town of Słubice.
